Student Showcase Of Films Award Show Moves To Maltz Jupiter Theatre

December 15, 2021

JUPITER, Fla. (CBS12) — The Palm Beaches Student Showcase of Films is changing venues for its awards show.

The ceremony will be held at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre next year.

The move is to further honor the legacy of actor Burt Reynolds who built the theater decades ago. Reynolds died in 2018.

This year, the Student Showcase of Films has a scholarship named after the late actor.

"Burt Reynolds' legacy will forever be associated with the SSOF and it's because of the graciousness of his family that we will continue on giving the Burt Reynolds scholarship, awarding that BR scholarship to a PBC high school senior who goes beyond and above the regular requirements for entry," said Michelle Hillery, the Deputy Film Commissioner of the Palm Beach County Film and Television Commission.

The theater is undergoing a $30 million facelift.

The statewide competition is open to all high school and college students in Florida. And it could lead to a big career in Hollywood.

"One of my favorite stories is Wes Ball who is the director of the Maze Runner trilogy," said Hillery. "He actually placed in the early 2000s as a third-place winner in the student showcase of films and went on to become the Maze Runner so we're very proud of him and his accomplishments."

The contest is in its 27th year. Celebrities like Vanilla Ice and other experts serve as judges.

"Vanilla Ice is a wonderful friend of ours, not only for the Film and Television Commission but for our students," added Hillery. "He has been amazing over the years. Every year he comes out and presents the Vanilla Ice Music Video Award winner each and every year. We named that award after him a few years ago because of his dedication and commitment to the Student Showcase of Films. He's a great inspiration and he loves doing this and it's just a bonus to have him here as our resident in Palm Beach County."

Submissions are being accepted now until the end of January 2022. There is more than $20,000 in cash, prizes and scholarships on the line for a dozen categories. Visit the SSOF website to read the rules and submit your entry.
