Project Seahorse

The Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), City of Boynton Beach Recreation and Parks Department, Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department, Drowning Prevention Coalition and Project Seahorse are working in collaboration to send 42 kids on a snorkeling experience Tuesday, July 2, 2015.  Children ages 10 – 12 from three of the city of Boynton Beach’s summer camp programs will learn about snorkeling and the marine resources right off the Boynton Beach shores.

To prepare for the special field trip, children have been working with dive and swim instructors from Project Seahorse and Florida Free Divers at the County pool Aqua Crest on July 13, 20 and 27 teaching them how to snorkel and use the equipment. Project Seahorse partner, Splash Down Center, helped to raise funds for the equipment so each child will have their own mask, snorkel and fins. Project Seahorse partners also include Ocean You and Jim Abernethy’s Scuba Adventures.

On Tuesday, July 28, the kids will board Splashdown Divers, Loggerhead Dive Charters and Keylypso of the Palm Beaches at the Boynton Harbor Marina with certified instructors from Florida Free Divers, City lifeguards and City staff to snorkel the Lofthus a historic shipwreck, a Norwegian ship which sank in 1898 about 200 yards off shore of the Boynton Beach coast.

After the snorkeling experience, the children will be transported to the Boynton Harbor Marina at 4 pm, where the CRA and Project Seahorse will have a special family barbecue with a presentation about the project with actual footage from the snorkel experience. KP Food Concession, KPA Promotions, Sweets Foundation and Discount Equipment donated funds for the barbeque. The Drowning Coalition will also be on site to teach families about drowning awareness.

Project Seahorse will show the campers and their families how amazing our beaches and reefs are and why people from all over the world come to Boynton Beach to dive and snorkel. When the children understand and embrace this wonderful, available resource, they will be able to direct their energies toward a better future for themselves and for Boynton Beach.
