OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

Approximately 95% of the characters with disabilities you see on TV are played by actors without a disability. This is only one issue with disability representation onscreen. Too often, when a person with disabilities does get a featured part, the show is all and only about their disability. Shows like Speechless and Switched at Birth have helped shift portrayals of disabled characters who have historically been depicted as pity-evoking “Tiny Tims” and vengeful “Captain Ahabs.” But there's still room for improvement.
