One-of-a-Kind Kids’ Scary Film Festival
Sugar Sand Park Community Center offers unique opportunity for budding filmmakers

(August 30, 2016) Young filmmakers ages 6-17 still have time to submit their scary film into the 5th Annual Kids’ Scary Film Festival by September 23. The festival is a part of the 12th annual Shriek Week, the Community Center’s premier Halloween event, running October 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29.

Feature film director Joe Menendez will be one of several industry professionals to judge the films for awards and prizes.  Award-winning filmmaker, and South Florida native, Menendez is both a successful feature film director and a prolific television director/producer.  Menendez has directed multiple episodes of the one-hour drama FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: The Series for Robert Rodriguez and his El Rey Network, multiples of the new Amazon Series JUST ADD MAGIC and the Prequel Series plus the "uncensored" episodes for the 2nd season of HULU's hit drama series EAST LOS HIGH. His feature film credits include LADRONES (THIEVES), and LADRON QUE ROBA A LADRON (TO ROB A THIEF), which opened at the time to a record-grossing opening weekend at the box-office for a Spanish-language film in the U.S.

The distinguished panel rounds out with writer, producer and director Naqi Khawer (nnmediapro.com); and team judges Stacey Steele and Carl Rimi, performers, directors, producers and creators in film, radio, stage and television.

In addition to the judge’s choices, fans can watch and vote for their favorite films online October 1-31 including the People’s Choice. The selected films will also be played in the Willow Theatre during Shriek Week while patrons are waiting in the queue for the Haunted House Tours.  Awards and prizes will be presented at a November ceremony at Sugar Sand Park Community Center.

Interested filmmakers can submit their film on DVD, along with the entry form and a $5 fee per film to the Community Center by September 23, for a chance to win prizes including the Grand Prize – a GoPro camera. Film formats may include stop-motion animation, film, animation, music videos and digital comic books. This year’s suggested theme is ‘Florida’s Terrifying Tourist Traps.’
