JAMES BEARDEN CELEBRATES WGPR-TV 50TH: AMERICA’S FIRST BLACK-OWNED TELEVISION STATION

The Palm Beach County Film & Television Commission proudly recognizes Board Member James Bearden, one of the founding members of WGPR-TV 62, as the historic station celebrates its 50th anniversary. Launched in 1975 in Detroit, WGPR-TV became America’s first Black-owned and operated television station, paving the way for diversity and representation in broadcast media. Bearden’s pioneering contributions helped establish a platform that empowered African American voices, produced locally focused programming, and inspired future generations of media professionals.

Today, WGPR-TV’s legacy lives on through the WGPR-TV Historical Society and Museum, preserving its groundbreaking story and cultural impact.  The Film Commission joins in celebrating Bearden’s continued leadership and his lasting influence on the evolution of inclusive storytelling in television and film.
