Awards Show Celebrates the Brilliant Life and Iconic Career of Burt Reynolds 


WHO:   Legendary film star Burt Reynolds to be posthumously honored for his years of collaboration   with the Student Showcase of Films (SSOF), as well as a special tribute to late County Commissioner Burt Aaronson by Commissioner Mary Lou Berger. Rap sensation and star of DIY’s The Vanilla Ice Project, Vanilla Ice; television personality Montel Williams; plus, other celebrities and industry pros to present awards to Florida student filmmakers. Awards show will be emceed by Frank Licari, multitalented star of South Florida PBS’ lifestyle series, On the Town in The Palm Beaches.  The Palm Beach Post’s Leslie Gray Streeter hosts the red carpet live broadcast on The Palm Beaches TV.

WHAT: The 24th Annual Palm Beaches Student Showcase of Films will have a “Bandit” Trans Am (similar to the car made famous by the Smokey and the Bandit film), video tribute and street painting honoring Burt Reynolds, Florida film school recruiters. Winners will be named in College Feature/ Short, High School Feature/Short, Commercial/PSA, Documentary, Music Video, Animation, Screenwriting, Environmental PSA, Mental Health Awareness PSA and Poster Design categories. Additionally, two high school seniors will receive the Burt Reynolds Scholarship and the Sara Fuller Scholarship. And a new Donald E. Ross Education PSA category debuts this year.

WHEN: Friday, April 5th - Red carpet and live broadcast  begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by  the awards show at 10:30 a.m. Entire event is viewable on The Palm Beaches TV mobile app and online at ThePalmBeaches.TV.

The Palm Beaches Student Showcase of Films (SSOF) is Florida’s largest student film competition, presenting over $1.6 million in cash and scholarships during its history, to high school and college students enrolled in film, television, graphic design and digital media courses. The SSOF red carpet awards show attracts more than 750 students along with celebrity presenters, entertainment industry professionals, educators, state and county officials and others. Previous presenters include Burt Reynolds, Vanilla Ice, actress/comedian Cheri Oteri, Howie D. (Backstreet Boys), actor Thomas Ian Nicholas(American Pie), actor/director Bruce Campbell (Escape from LA), actor Clint Howard (The Waterboy), actress Linda Blair (The Exorcist) and more! The SSOF is funded by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners through the Department of Housing & Economic Sustainability.
